Mr. Mark FalworthConsultant Orthopaedic Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon
MB BS FRCS(Eng) FRCS(Orth)

Dr Mark S Falworth

Mr Falworth’s practice is solely limited to the management of shoulder and elbow conditions. His expertise in this field was recognised by his appointment as a Consultant Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore in 2006. He brings this experience to his private practice, which is based on the multidisciplinary approach to the surgical and non-surgical treatments of conditions affecting the shoulder and elbow. Patients’ needs, and the use of physiotherapy and interventional radiology techniques, are always considered before surgical solutions are discussed and utilised. All treatments are evidence based and reflect the exacting standards that Mr Falworth adheres to.

Mr Falworth qualified in Medicine from King’s College Hospital, London in 1996. His higher specialist orthopaedic training was undertaken on the St Mary’s Hospital (North West Thames) rotation where he gained extensive experience in shoulder and elbow surgery after working with some of the UK’s leading shoulder surgeons. He then undertook more specialist training at the internationally acclaimed Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore under the guidance of Ian Bayley, before he undertook just under two years of further specialist Fellowship training in shoulder and elbow surgery.

  • Shoulder & Elbow Surgery Fellow; Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore
  • AO Trauma / Shoulder Surgery Fellow; Salzberg, Austria; Dr Resch
  • Sports Surgery and Arthroplasty Fellow; Sportsmed.SA, Adelaide, Australia
  • British Elbow and Shoulder Society Travelling Fellow; Dr Burkhart (San Antonio) & Dr Romeo (Chicago)

Mr Falworth was honoured to be appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon to the prestigious Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH - Stanmore) in 2006. At the RNOH, Mr Falworth provides a comprehensive service covering all aspects of open and arthroscopic shoulder and elbow surgery, including providing a significant revision service to other orthopaedic surgeons throughout the UK. He is widely published in the orthopaedic research literature as well as being the author of several text book chapters related to shoulder and elbow surgery. He has pioneered techniques in many aspects of shoulder and elbow surgery, including computer aided surgery, and is a regular invited speaker at both national and international scientific meetings and instructional courses.

Mr. Falworth was the Clinical Lead to the Shoulder and Elbow Unit at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital from 2012 to 2017. He was elected as Treasurer to the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS) in 2017 and was also an elected member of BESS Council from 2017 to 2021. He is a joint author for three BESS UK Treatment Guidelines for; The Provision of Primary and Revision Elbow Arthroplasty, The Management of Peri-Prosthetic Joint Infection in the Shoulder and Elbow and also The Management of Atraumatic Shoulder Instability. In 2018, Mr. Falworth was awarded a prestigious BESS Copeland Fellowship in order to help project the work of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society internationally. This culminated in a three-week lecture tour of India in 2019, and in 2021 Mr Falworth was elected Chairman of the BESS Instructional Course, where he is responsible for coordinating educational content for other Shoulder and Elbow surgeons in the UK.

When not caring for his patients, Mr Falworth spends much of his time with his wife and children. His weekends are spent involved with his local rugby club where he was previously a RFU registered coach. He also enjoys skiing, sailing, photography and, when time allows, attempting to improve his golf handicap.
